How Travel Advisories May Affect Your Group Benefits Coverage
As travel plans pick up throughout the year, we want to share an important reminder about how Government of Canada travel advisories can affect your Group Benefits coverage while travelling outside Canada.
Most group benefit plans include emergency medical travel coverage. However, coverage may be limited or excluded depending on the travel advisory status of your destination at the time you travel.
How Travel Advisories Can Affect Your Coverage
If a destination is listed as:
“Avoid non-essential travel”, or
“Avoid all travel”
your emergency medical coverage may be reduced or not apply at all, even if you are enrolled in a group benefits plan. This can result in:
- Denied or limited emergency medical claims
- Out-of-pocket expenses for hospital care, physician services, or medical evacuation
- No coverage for trip-related complications tied to the advisory
If You Have an Upcoming Trip
To protect yourself and avoid surprises, we recommend the following steps:
- Check the current Government of Canada travel advisories for your destination: https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories
- Contact your insurance carrier directly via portal or phone to confirm how coverage may be affected. This is the fastest way to get accurate information.
- Reach out to Capcorp Financial if you need additional guidance or clarification regarding your plan coverage.
Being informed before you travel can make all the difference if an unexpected medical situation arises.
If you have upcoming travel plans or questions about your coverage, please don’t hesitate to contact your Capcorp Financial advisor. We’re here to help you travel with confidence
